Ashtanga for beginners - 4 week block

The pranayama (breath) used in Ashtanga is called Ujjayi breathing, this breath is used in support of the yoga postures, moving from one pose to the next on an inhalation or an exhalation. The benefits: concentrates and directs the breath, giving asana practice extra power and focus, also increasing oxygen consumption.

There are many reasons for trying out Ashtanga yoga including: increased fitness, flexibility, increased concentration, improved posture and even weight loss. For those who are already sports people it can stretch and balance the muscle groups not used in your sport.

We will practice the classic Hatha Yoga sequence Sūrya Namaskara, paying particular attention to the Breath so that the practice becomes a moving meditation – a subtle flow of energy which reflects our relationship to the Sun.

This workshop on the eve of the first full moon after Summer Solstice will explore the ancient human tradition of reverence and gratitude for the spiritual and physical life-giving energy of the Sun as part of Creation. 


We will practice the classic Hatha Yoga sequence Sūrya Namaskara, paying particular attention to the Breath so that the practice becomes a moving meditation – a subtle flow of energy which reflects our relationship to the Sun.

A light vegetarian supper will be served downstairs in the Restaurant, or in the Courtyard (weather permitting).
